What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition that causes rapid skin cell turnover, leading to thick, scaly patches on the skin. It is non-contagious but can be genetically inherited. Psoriasis can occur on the scalp, elbows, knees, lower back, and nails, but it may also affect other areas.

Causes of Psoriasis

Psoriasis is caused by a dysfunction in the immune system, which leads to excessive skin cell production. Common triggers include:

  • Genetics – Family history of psoriasis.
  • Immune System Overactivity – Triggers inflammation and rapid skin cell growth.
  • Stress – Can worsen flare-ups.
  • Infections – Strep throat or skin infections can trigger psoriasis.
  • Skin Injuries – Cuts, burns, or bug bites may lead to psoriasis patches (Koebner phenomenon).

Symptoms of Psoriasis

Symptoms depend on the type of psoriasis but commonly include:

  • Red, Inflamed Skin – Patches covered with white or silvery scales.
  • Itching & Burning Sensation – Skin discomfort or pain.
  • Cracked or Bleeding Skin – Severe cases may cause skin fissures.
  • Thickened or Pitted Nails – Nail psoriasis can cause discoloration and brittleness.
  • Joint Pain & Swelling – Psoriatic arthritis affects joints in some cases.
